A person is kidnapped when he or she is moved from one place to another against his or her will. In some states, it is also kidnapping to secretly confine the victim, even though the victim isn’t taken anywhere. A kidnapping can be accomplished through force, such as knocking the victim unconscious. Or it can consist of threatening to harm the victim or members of his or her family if the victim doesn’t accompany the kidnapper. Does the kidnapper have to make a demand for ransom in order for the crime of kidnapping to be committed? No; but if such a demand is made, the punishment usually is increased.
